MUSIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES - Grade 3
The Student:

Standard 1: sings alone or with others a varied repertoire of music.
* Sings with appropriate tone, pitch, dynamics, and rhythm alone or with accompaniment+

* Sings and signs extended pentatonic scale, including low La and low Sol. +

* Sings 2,3, and 4 pt. canon, 2 pt. solfa, 2 pt. ostinato, and partner songs.

Standard 2: performs on instruments alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
* Performs rhythmic, melodic and chordal patterns on classroom instruments. +

* Performs beat, tempo variation, and duple meters.

* Performs and identifies piano, mezzo piano, mezzo forte, forte crescendo, and decrescendo with speech, song, movement, and instruments.

* Demonstrates the ability to play notes B, A, G on the recorder.

Standard 3: Improvises melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
* Improvises rhythmic and melodic patterns.+

* Improvises questions and answers through speech, body percussion, non-pitched instruments, and movement.

* Applies sound qualities of pitched classroom instruments in various folk songs.

Standard 4: Composes music within specified guidelines.
* Composes short pieces within specific guidelines.+

* Creates non-pitched instrument accompaniment with speech.

* Creates simple movement in groups to accompany song and music.

Standard 5: Reads and Notates music.
* Uses standard symbols to read and notate rhythm: sixteenth notes, sixteenth & eighth rests.+

* Uses proper names for rhythm note names and absolute pitch names.

* Uses a five line staff with Do Clef to read/notate pentatonic tones in C-do, G-do, F-do.+

* Uses the Treble Clef of G-Clef to notate and read G A B on recorder.

* Uses standard time signature for 2/4, and 4/4.

Standard 6: Listens, analyzes, evaluates, and describes music.
* Understands and use music vocabulary: D.C. al fine repeat sign, first and second endings, coda, and double bar.+

* Performs and identify ritardando and accelerando with song, movement, and instruments.

* Distinguishes voicings. (soprano, alto, tenor, bass)

* Distinguish between a solo, duet, trio, and quartet.

* Responds through movement to selected music: square and line dances.

* Identifies Do Clef and Treble Clef for placement of pitch on staff.

* Analyzes own performance and that of others.

Standard 7: Explores various cultures through the study of music and music history.
* Understands the role of music in various settings and cultures.+

* Demonstrates correct playing technique on soprano recorder.

* Performs, listens and studies a wide variety of songs including singing games, and cumulative, patriotic, seasonal, simple two-part rounds, call and response, spirituals, canons/rounds, ballads, and folk songs, and hymns from various cultures.

* Understands recorder family instruments.
