MUSIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES - Grade 2
The Student:

Standard 1: sings alone or with others a varied repertoire of music.
* Sings and signs Do Re Mi Sol La and high Do using Curwen hand signals.+

* Sings rhythmic and melodic canon, 2 pt. sung canon, and melodic ostinati. +

* Sings with appropriate tone, pitch, dynamics, and rhythm alone or with accompaniment.

* Perform and distinguish staccato and legato through moving, speaking, and singing.

Standard 2: performs on instruments alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
* Performs simple patterns on instruments - non-pitched and barred instruments. +

* Clap or play rhythm patterns of familiar songs with vocalization and internally (think the words).

* Performs loud (f), soft (p), and medium (mf/mp) through body percussion, instrument playing, and singing.

* Performs two ostinati, simple bordun, simple two-part rounds and simple speech ensembles.

Standard 3: Improvises melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
* Improvises 4 beat rhythmic and melodic answers to questions. +

* Creates combinations of different sounds using speech, body percussion, and instruments.

Standard 4: Composes music within specified guidelines.
* Composes 4 beat patterns using short, long, and silent notation. +

* Create simple patschen patterns alone and/or with others to accompany song or speech.

Standard 5: Reads and Notates music.
* Uses standard symbols to notate: meter in 2 and 4, single and double bar lines, repeat sign, rhythm, and pitch. +

* Uses system to read simple pitch notation on a five line staff, and reads from scores and charts. +

* Speaks and uses rhythmic syllables: tied quarter notes/ half note:"ta-ah", half and whole rest, whole note:"ta-ah-ah-ah".

* Uses melodic syllables: to sing, sign, and write a pentatonic scale from low Do to high Do.

Standard 6: Listens, analyzes, evaluates, and describes music.
* Identifies simple musical form: motive, phrase, AA', ABA, ABAB, and 1st & 2nd endings. +

* Responds through movement to selected music: play party games and dances. +

* Demonstrates tempo changes through body percussion, movement, and instrument playing

* Claps or plays rhythm patterns of familiar songs with vocalization and internally (think the words).

* Identifies Do Clef for placement of pitch on staff; identifies line and space notes.

* Identifies classroom percussion by name and timbre (skin, wood, metal, gourds).

* Distinguishes stepwise and leaping intervals aurally.

* Distinguishes between a solo, duet, and trio.

* Recognizes repeated tones.

* Analyzes own performance and that of others.

Standard 7: Explores various cultures through the study of music and music history.
* Demonstrates polite audience behavior during performances. +

* Demonstrate correct playing technique on classroom instruments.

* Performs, listens and studies a wide variety of songs including singing games and cumulative, patriotic, seasonal, simple two-part round, call and response, folk songs and hymns from various cultures.
